"Besides South Africans, participants from Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Kenya, Botswana and Namibia attended the Doctoral Research Training Programme held towards the end of September. The number of doctoral candidates attending totalled 49. The programme was presented by Prof Arthur Money from Henley Management College in the UK," USB said.

The USB, as the only South African business school which is a member of the European Doctoral Programmes Association in Management and Business Administration (EDAMBA), regularly sends PhD students for summer schools to Europe. This is where they hone their research skills and network with peers from business schools in Europe.

The four USB students who attended the EDAMBA summer school in Soreze, France, this year were Florian Boehlandt, Ferdie Lochner, Percy Saungweme and Mark Chettiar.

According to Lochner the opportunity to be fully immersed in research with leading thinkers was worth the trip. "You must go with clear ideas of what you want from the interaction but remain open to new and interesting ideas."

Prof Frikkie Herbst, head of the USB's doctoral programme, attended the EDAMBA annual general meeting in Poland. Here he network with leading European business schools who offer PhD programmes.

Two PhD students received funding of about R60 000 from the BANKSETA Doctoral and Post-doctoral Research Funding Programme 2009. They are Fungai Mudima and Marianne Engelbrecht.
