The FINANCIAL -- Fast food chain Burger King has dropped its Irish beef supplier in the wake of the horse meat in burgers scandal.

The chain said it had decided to replace all Silvercrest products in Britain and Ireland with products from another approved supplier, warning its customers about a possible hamburger shortage.

“As a precaution, this past weekend we decided to replace all Silvercrest products in the UK & Ireland with products from another approved Burger King supplier,” the company said. “Unfortunately this may mean that some of our products are temporarily unavailable.”

As Caterer and Hotelkeeper announced, the move comes after the British food industry was rocked by the revelation last week that retailers including Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and Iceland had sold beef products that contained horse meat. Ireland’s food safety authorities discovered that some frozen beef burgers from a Silvercrest plant in Ireland and another Irish supplier Liffey Meats were contaminated with up to nearly a third (29%) of horse meat.

This has led to the temporary closure of a Silvercrest plant. However, the company insisted last week that the Burger King products made by Silvercrest were unaffected by the contamination.

Burger King said it was “working diligently” to identify suppliers that could produce 100% pure Irish and British beef products.
