Iran's Ahmadinejad demands Obama apology for meddling

25/06/2009 15:13 (437 Day 19:50 minutes ago)

The FINANCIAL -- According to RIA Novosti, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for a public apology from U.S. President Barack Obama on June 25 over claims Washington interfered in Iran's internal affairs, Fars news agency reported.

The demand comes two days after Obama expressed his shock and condemnation at Iran's handling of street protests where at least 13 people were reported killed and hundreds arrested.

"I hope that you (Obama) will stop interfering in Iran's affairs and ask for forgiveness so that the Iranian people know," Ahmadinejad was quoted by the agency as saying, adding: "Mr. Obama made a mistake when he said that...We would like to know why he has fallen into the same trap by saying the same thing [former U.S. president George] Bush said."

Ahmadinejad's landslide victory on June 12 sparked the largest mass protests in the country since the 1979 Islamic Revolution amid opposition allegations of ballot fraud.

Despite calls by some western powers, Iranian state television reported on Tuesday that the Guardian Council would not annul the results of the presidential vote.
