In the early 90s the Georgian community was first exposed to the paintings of Nodar Giunashvili. From 1991-2008 his pieces have been displayed at leading art halls and exhibitions in Germany, France, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Russia. He is well known to the cultivated audiences of Europe through his artworks which reach the sensitive part of any spectator by virtue of his exceptional technique and chromatic beauty.

“Only after so many years have I dared to hold a personal exhibition in Georgia. This effort called for high responsibility before my teachers, colleagues and public. Now I feel that my work has reached the extent that it is worthy to be seen and appraised by the Georgian public. The contribution of the Open Society Georgia Foundation is huge, since without their effort this idea would not have been realized,” says the artist.

“I am a little nervous but as far as I can see the guests are contented and that’s the main point for me,” Giunashvili says.

The Open Society Georgia foundation will keep on hosting Nodar Giunashvili’s paintings until September 29 after which time the artist will leave for France for another exhibition opportunity.

Nodar Giunashvili was born in Tskhinvali. In 1975 he enrolled at Tskhinvali Arts institution. After finishing the institute he pursued his studies in the Tbilisi Arts Academy in the faculty of Painting. His first exhibition took place in Tbilisi during 1988-1991. Since then he hasn’t held a personal exhibition in Georgia, however he has participated in a number of collective exhibitions. He is a member of UNESCO international foundation of Artists and the Union of Georgian Artists.

His parents fled from their home due to conflict in breakaway Ossetia.

The Open society Georgia Foundation was established in 1994 by the New York Open Society Institute. The foundation is a member of a network of foundations established by George Soros. Based on its’ priorities, the foundation issues grants to non-profit, non-governmental organizations and individuals.

According to the officials of the Open Society Georgia Foundation the Open Gallery will be a non commercial gallery that will support various talented artists in Georgia.
