The appointments followed the recommendations made by the Board’s own Nominations Committee, tasked with the selection of candidates for the United Nations’ highest-ranking advisory body involving business and civil society.

The new Board members are:

Fernando Chico Pardo, Founder and President, PROMECAP, S.C. (Mexico)
Juan De La Mota, President, Global Compact Network Spain
Charles O. Holliday, Chairman of the Board, DuPont, (US)
Cecilia Ibru, CEO & Managing Director, Oceanic Bank International (Nigeria)
Jamshed Irani, Director of the Board, Tata Sons Ltd. (India)
Chey Tae-won, President & Chairman, SK Group, (South Korea)

The Secretary-General further thanked Board members Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Anthony Ling, and B. Muthuraman, who have completed their terms of appointment, for their championship, dedication and commitment to the initiative.

Earlier, the Secretary-General approved the Board’s new terms of reference, the body’s key governance document. The latest version clarifies the Board nomination and selection process, as well as operational and procedural matters.

Chaired by the Secretary-General, the UN Global Compact Board was created in 2006 as a multi-stakeholder body to provide strategic and policy advice for the initiative as a whole and to make recommendation to the UN Global Compact Office, participants and other stakeholders. With now 23 members representing business, civil society, labour, and the United Nations, the Board also oversees implementation of the UN Global Compact’s integrity measures, under which more than 900 companies have been delisted (as of March 2009) for not communicating on progress made in the implementation of the Global Compact principles.
