Iran seeks diplomatic end to nuclear issue - parliament speaker

30/11/2009 17:25 (71 Day 03:27 minutes ago)

The FINANCIAL -- According to RIA Novosti, Tehran is still seeking a diplomatic solution to the dispute over its nuclear program, following a resolution passed by the UN nuclear agency against Iran, the parliament speaker said on November 30.

Iran's parliament demanded on Sunday that the government reduce cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency following Friday's resolution by the UN nuclear watchdog condemning Iran's work to build a new nuclear facility and censuring it for withholding information on its controversial nuclear program.

"I believe there is still room for diplomacy and it is useful... to adopt a diplomatic option," Ali Larijani was quoted by ISNA as saying.

"That way Iran would be able to make progress within the framework of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) while they would also be certain that Iran activities are peaceful."

He warned, however, that if the West chose "to take a different path Iran would also adopt a different stance."

The Iranian lawmakers condemned the IAEA resolution and urged the government to quickly draft a plan to reduce cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.

Of the 35-member IAEA Board of Governors, 25 countries voted for the resolution, including Germany, Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
