The FINANCIAL -- Within the framework of his working visit to Strasbourg Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze held a meeting with Isil Gachet, Director of the Office of Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights.

The sides discussed various issues relating to relations between Georgia and the Council of Europe paying special attention to successful co-operation in the area of human rights protection. Discussions also focused on the difficult human rights situation in Georgia’s occupied regions. The Minister briefed the CoE representatives on the closure of the so-called checkpoints along the occupation line in Abkhazia and on the so-called referendum due to be held in the Tskhinvali region on 9 April. It was emphasized during the meeting that such steps grossly violate the fundamental rights of the local population and are directed at achieving the complete isolation of the occupied territories.
