EU calls for immediate stop to fighting in Eastern Ukraine

The FINANCIAL -- The European Union has called for an immediate stop to the recent fighting around Avdiivka in Eastern Ukraine.

"The intense fighting around Avdiivka in the last few days, involving heavy shelling with proscribed weapons and leading to a considerable number of casualties, is a blatant violation of the ceasefire, as stipulated by the Minsk agreements," a statement said on 31 January, warning that civilians were being put at grave risk.

"We call for the fighting to stop immediately," allowing the urgent repair of critical infrastructures, the EU said, adding that full observance of the ceasefire was a crucial step towards the full implementation of the Minsk agreements, "which is the basis for a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the conflict, respecting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

The EU called for the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to be granted full and unrestricted access to all conflict-affected areas, according to EU Neighbours East Info.
