The FINANCIALÂ — On average 100 Turkish and Ukrainian couples apply to get married in the Turkish Embassy in Ukraine, Turkish Deputy Ambassador to Ukraine Ă–zgĂĽr Arslan told Turkish newspaper Zaman.
Family values in Ukraine and Turkey were discussed on Wednesday at a roundtable meeting held in Kiev which Ukrainian deputies, scientists, Turkish and Ukrainian theologians and members of the press attended. The meeting was held by the Turkey-based Dialogue Eurasia Platform (DA), an international civil society organization, and the Ukrainian parliamentary commission on families.
According to Zaman newspaper, Speaking during the roundtable discussions, Arslan said on average 100 couples apply to get married at the Turkish Embassy in Kiev every month and that this number increases even more with applications submitted to the Turkish Consulate General in Odessa. DA Ukraine Committee head Vladimir Sergeychuk said after the meetings that Ukrainian and Turkish experts had gathered to bring the issues of protection and development of family values to people’s attention through the meeting. “The experts display the common intention of finding solutions to family-related problems. Both countries have strong family values and DA endeavors to show these values and share them,” he said.
Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk, who also headed the Ukrainian parliament’s Committee for European Integration, pointed out the importance of discussing family values in Turkey and Ukraine, two countries which are integrating into Europe, in his opening remarks. Taraysuk also noted that developments in women’s rights are remarkable.
Dursun Ayan, an expert in family and social research with the Turkish Prime Ministry, said they work hard to eliminate violence faced by women in families. He noted that they are also working to protect and develop the family values of Turks living outside Turkey, adding that they work in concert with foreign experts.
DA Co-Chairman Harun Tokak underlined that world peace cannot be achieved without lasting peace in Eurasia and said each meeting in the region is very important and valuable. At the end of the meeting, Tokak presented a plaque to Tarasyuk.
