The past few years have been hectic, from COVID-19 to the cost-of-living crisis, we just cannot seem to catch a break! When it comes to advertising, however, 2023 may just be the year for simple advertising methods that are effective yet still easy to implement.
The advertising landscape has gone through a tumultuous period itself – COVID-19 affected the types of advertising that were being used, whilst the cost-of-living crisis is currently impacting advertising budgets for many brands and businesses.
As a result, it is not surprising that simple advertising tactics may be the holy grail of the advertising world in 2023.
Advertising
In a society where technology is a prominent part of our lives, advertising has evolved tremendously. With the help of technology, advertising has become a force to be reckoned with.
For example, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have been made possible due to advancements in technology, and we are seeing these new technologies being incorporated into advertising itself.
For a tech-savvy society like ours, of course we would be intrigued by these types of ads! Whilst AR and VR are certainly the future, perhaps they are also the reason why this year, we should take a step back and allow simple advertising ads to take the forefront of the advertising landscape.
Simple advertising
When we say, ‘simple advertising’, this is exactly what we mean:
Not necessarily traditional advertising methods, but methods that do not require a ton of equipment or new technology. This can range from brochures or leaflets to physical mail and billboards. It can be both digital and non-digital.
For instance, street advertising is a simple yet effective advertising method that advertisers should not overlook when it comes to generating leads and increasing brand awareness and exposure.
This type of advertising is nested under the umbrella of out-of-home (OOH) advertising which also houses forms of outdoor advertising such as billboards, digital screens (mounted and standing).
Compared to other forms of advertising like television ads, these simple advertising tactics are certainly more cost-effective, making them perfect for brands who are struggling with the current economic climate. They are also beneficial for businesses who are trying to attract their local audience as OOH advertising can be localised effectively.
Why simple but effective advertising works
Basic advertising is exactly what we need after the obstacles we have faced in the past few years. In fact, simple online ads do much better at capturing the attention of an audience than a complex one does. In an overcrowded online ad space, brands need to find ways to make their ad unique and eye-catching – most do this by trying to create an intricate ad that requires adept attention and concentration.
Unfortunately, this can lead to its own demise. Ads that are straightforward are more likely to catch the attention of a consumer, allowing them to process it effectively compared to a complex ad that may grab their attention but is too complicated to hold it.
We have overcome many challenges, and although innovative advertising ideas via AR and/or VR certainly sound appealing, we are envisioning a fresher and minimalist approach to advertising in 2023.
