Civil.Ge — Iakub Lakoba, leader of the Abkhaz opposition People’s Party, who was arrested over libel charges, was released on January 22, the Abkhaz news agency, Apsnipress, reported.
Lakoba was arrested on January 21 for, as the prosecutor’s office claimed, “slandering” head of Russia’s state audit chamber Sergei Stepashin.
Charges against Lakoba have not been dropped and the investigation into the case is ongoing, according to the Abkhaz prosecutor’s office. He was released on the condition to show up at the police station pending investigation.
