The FINANCIAL — Strasbourg, 05.09.2011 – The Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will be meeting in Paris on 7 September.
Its agenda will include adoption of the report by Dick Marty (Switzerland, ALDE) on the abuse of state secrecy and national security, which places obstacles in the path of parliamentary and judicial scrutiny of human rights violations.
Between midday and 1 pm the committee will also be holding a round-table discussion on the threats to the rule of law in member states – in the framework of the preparation of a report on this topic by Marieluise Beck (Germany, ALDE) – that will focus on the circumstances of the death of Sergei Magnitsky in 2009 in a Russian prison. Invited speakers will include Elena Panfilova, Director General of the Centre for Anti-corruption Research and Initiative Transparency International (Moscow) and Yevgenia Albats, Editor-in-Chief of The New Times (Moscow).
Also on the agenda is the adoption of the report by Lord John Tomlinson (United Kingdom, SOC) on human rights and the fight against terrorism.
