The FINANCIAL — Two new cross border cooperation agreements were signed yesterday between Moldova and Ukraine that will make it faster and easier to move across their joint border.
The EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) has long advocated these agreements as a way to facilitate border crossing and boost regional development and trade, and has been working with Moldova and Ukraine to help align them with EU standards of border management.
The first agreement, establishing joint control at the Pervomaisc-Kuchurhan border crossing, will allow goods for import, export and transit through Transnistria to move through this point, saving time and money, eliminating the need for re-routing goods, and avoiding double customs clearance in both Chisinau and Tiraspol. Longer term, this should help re-open international transport corridors across Transnistria, according to EU Neighbourhood Info.
The second, on the automated exchange of crossing data across the Moldova-Ukraine border, will enhance security through increasing transparency about the movement of vehicles and goods. It could also remove the obligation for foreign citizens entering Transnistria to register their stay with the Moldovan authorities, avoiding the need to travel over to the administrative boundary line on the west side of Transnistria.
The EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) aims to improve cooperation between the border-guard and customs services and with other law-enforcement agencies, and facilitate cross-border and international cooperation. EUBAM seeks to promote confidence building and to contribute to the peaceful settlement of the Transnistria conflict, as well as to engage with civil society and support the partner services’ anti-corruption and good governance efforts.
