The FINANCIAL — The nominations for the 36th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards are out, and AOL is on the list this year with nominations in two categories.
AOL Originals’ “TRUE TRANS WITH LAURA JANE GRACE” was recognized in New Approaches: Arts, Lifestyle, Culture category and AOL’s MAKERS was recognized in the Outstanding Historical Programming – Long-Form category, according to AOL.
“TRUE TRANS WITH LAURA JANE GRACE” is nominated in the New Approaches: Arts, Lifestyle, Culture category. It tells the story of Laura Jane Grace, a transgender pioneer and lead singer of the punk band Against Me!, who came out as transgender at the height of her music career in 2012. “True Trans” shares the remarkable journey of Laura and other transgender individuals across the country. The series explores poignant moments from Laura’s life like identifying as transgender, the decision to come out publicly and the overall transition experience. Throughout the series, viewers and fans get an up close and personal look at people whose stories are just now beginning to be told. “True Trans” which first debuted on AOL in October 2014, was Directed by Austin Reza and Executive Produced by Nate Hayden. The series is an AOL Studios production in association with Reza & Company Productions.
MAKERS is nominated in the Outstanding Historical Programming – Long-Form category. This documentary series tells the stories of trailblazing women in the traditionally male-dominated industries of war, comedy, space, business, Hollywood and politics. MAKERS captures the experiences of recognizable figures, like Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Sheryl Sandberg, Martha Stewart, Indra Nooyi, Lena Dunham and Ellen DeGeneres, as well as the stories that need to be known like Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space, and Angela Salinas, the first Hispanic woman to become a United States Marine Corps general officer. The documentary series was produced by Kunhardt McGee Productions in association with Ark Media, Loki Films, Moxie Firecracker Films and WETA Washington. Support was also provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS.
This is third nomination for AOL Originals and the first nomination for MAKERS.
