The FINANCIAL — EU High Representative Catherine Ashton has pledged to help Moldova to “move forward as a nation determined to make its own choices, determined to offer, for its young people especially, a bright and prosperous future,” according to the EU NEIGHBOURHOOD INFO CENTRE.
Ashton told the country’s Prime Minister Iurie Leanca during their meeting in Chisinau yesterday that she was “honoured to have the chance to come back, to visit this great country” and congratulated him, on behalf of all of the EU, for his appointment as Prime Minister.
Ashton praised Leanca for his commitment to support the people of Moldova, into a future that will build on the current economic growth (of 3.5%), according to the EU NEIGHBOURHOOD INFO CENTRE.
The High Representative called on Moldova’s government to continue the process of reform, “of ensuring that people have the feeling, in every aspect of their daily life, that genuinely they are offered the best. And that they can feel reassured in the institutions that provide for them.”
She hailed progress in EU-Moldova relations over “all the elements of a strong relationship,” including trade and visas, adding that the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius should become be “a real opportunity to celebrate the strength of this relationship, including [in moving towards] signature of the Association Agreement.”
Ashton said the EU was pleased to play a strong and active role in the 5+2 talks on Transnistria, stressing the need to find a solution offering a brighter future to all.
“But more than anything, I have come here today to celebrate your position, to have the chance to meet with the President, and the political leaders, to send the strongest possible message of support to this country and to its people," the EU Foreign Affairs Chief concluded.
