The FINANCIAL — Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has warned retailers against raising prices of buckwheat and sunflower oil.
Azarov announced this to journalists.
«Everyone who is presently playing [with prices] is playing a dangerous game, primarily for himself,» Azarov said.
He added that prices of buckwheat and sunflower oil are overstated but, according to him, the government is not to blame for this because it does not trade in foodstuffs but merely creates conductions for the market.
«The government creates conditions, regulates, but it does not trade. Why are buckwheat prices UAH 4 at the factory and UAH 15 in the shop and supermarket? Who wanted to make money on panic buying?» Azarov said.
At the same time, he said that although the government presently has no special instruments for changing the situation, it would implement a program for construction of vegetable warehouses and wholesale agricultural markets in the future to facilitate solution of this problem.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Cabinet of Ministers added buckwheat to the list of products that are subject to government price regulation in the period of January 1-June 30 2011 in late December.
