The FINANCIAL — London – Barclays has launched a new, comprehensive guide to support its Philanthropy Service for its high net worth clients. Philanthropy: Your Guide to Giving provides step-by-step advice and answers questions about all aspects of charitable giving, according to Barclays.
The guide, the first of its kind from a UK private bank, will be used by Barclays as part of the broader Philanthropy Service that aims to engage, educate and support clients with their giving efforts.
With tailored guidance and detailed examples from experts in their field, the handbook complements the philanthropy offering from Barclays which includes research, master classes and workshops, according to Barclays.
“We know that clients are increasingly looking to become involved in giving, but often face challenges in getting started, particularly when it comes to thinking about giving for the first time, what it means to them and the impact this will have," said Emma Turner, Head of Client Philanthropy, Barclays Wealth and Investment Management.
“There are a number of common questions that people are seeking answers to, from where they should start and how much should they give, to how to ensure success. The guide aims to answer these questions, providing clients with the knowledge, confidence and motivation to start and enjoy their,” she added.
Featuring practical information on topics from charity governance to putting a board together, the handbook is designed to cover the complete philanthropic journey. “There are a couple of areas which we think are important and not often written about. One is thinking about the talent and skills needed for the people who may join you on your board and, equally important, what you need to think about if you’re asked to be a trustee of a charity,” Emma Turner added.
The guide also contains a number of case studies from founders of charitable causes, those who support different areas, as well as those involved in planning and governance, according to Barclays.
“Having worked with many families and trusts on their philanthropic giving, I am delighted to be able to pass on the knowledge gleaned from the numerous questions and conversations I have had with them, especially around involving wider family members and children in giving. It is such an important aspect of philanthropy, and one that needs careful navigating to ensure young people fully understand the role they can play, so I am thrilled that we are able to cover some of these issues within the guide,” said Victoria Hornby, Director of Grants of the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, and an expert philanthropy advisor who contributed to the guide.
Recent research by Barclays demonstrated the appetite for philanthropic giving among high net worth individuals, with 48% planning to give to charity during their lifetime, according to Barclays.
