The FINANCIAL — For the first time during the 90-year history, Batumi State Maritime Academy of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia has its own training ship.
Upon the initiative of the First Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Dimitry Kumsishvili, the state-owned tanker “Cadet” was handed over to the Academy free of charge. The First Vice Prime Minister and the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Dimitry Kumsishvili, the Deputy Minister Cherkezishvili, the Chairman of the Adjara Government Zurab Pataradze, the Head of the Maritime Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development Mamuka Akhaladze and the Rector of the Batumi State Maritime Academy Irakli Sharabidze attended the official ceremony dedicate to the event.
The ship was transferred to the Customs Department of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finances of Georgia following the Order No.30545 of 13 August, 2015 and its value was determined to be 1 772 000 GEL, according to Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.
According to the Batumi State Maritime Academy of the Ministry of Economy, this is a very important decision because the Academy had no training ship before. The Academy students will have the opportunity to take the marine practice directly on the ship starting from 2018.
According to the Maritime Academy, the transferred tanker ‘Cadet’ is very important for the development of students’ practical skills. Besides, the practice carried out on this ship will facilitate the employment of graduates.
Following the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the crew members are required to develop practical skills of ship management, thus all educational programs in the institution provide maritime practice on the ship. In the future, the Academy will provide 30-40 students in the semester the actual marine practice. Up to this date, the students had to take the practice course on the ships at the basis of the Poti or Kulevi ports.
