The FINANCIAL — According to Civil Georgia, Nino Burjanadze, a former parliamentary chairperson, announced on October 27 about setting up of “a clear-cut opposition party” under the name – Democratic Movement-United Georgia.
“The recent developments have demonstrated that those people who are currently in the government have no capability to prevent new threats. Hence, Nino Burjanadze is returning back to the active politics,” she said in a statement.
A inaugural congress of Burjanadze’s party will be held on November 23, a fifth year anniversary of the Rose Revolution.
Setting up of a political party by Burjanadze was highly expected. In July she established a think-tank, Foundation for Democracy and Development, which was believed to be a grassroots organization that would serve as a platform for her political comeback.
Burjanadze also said in her statement that “the crisis is deepening day after day.”
“We are facing an extremely difficult reality because of mistakes and inappropriate steps undertaken by the authorities,” she said. “Expected new provocations make the situation even worse. Great probability of new threats exists.”
