The FINANCIAL — According to Civil Georgia, an activist from opposition Democratic Movement–United Georgia, led by former parliamentary chairperson, Nino Burjanadze, was arrested in Batumi.
Zurab Avaliani, who is a chairman of the party’s local unit in Batumi, was arrested on Monday in his house, the party activists told Rustavi 2 TV. They also said that the police officers “planted arms” in his house and suggested that the charges would be brought for illegal possession of arms.
The Interior Ministry spokesman, Shota Khizanishvili, has declined to comment and said an official statement would be made later.
Nino Burjanadze also plans to make a statement on the matter.
Earlier this month the Georgian tabloid Alia reported that Burjanadze’s husband, Badri Bitsadze, a former head of Border Police, had plans to set up armed groups. In an unusual move, the Rustavi 2 TV, picked up the newspaper article and covered the suggestions extensively in its primetime news program on March 10. At that time Nino Burjanadze said that it was the authorities “dirty campaign” against her party.
