ENPARD: developing a strategy for rural development in Georgia

The FINANCIAL -- European experiences and debates about the vision for rural development in Georgia were in focus at an International Stakeholders' Conference organized by the EU-funded ENPARD programme in Tbilisi last week. Modernising agriculture is a critical priority to help tackle rural poverty in Georgia, a press release said.

Among the participants were officials from the EU and the Georgian government, as well as representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organisation and other key stakeholders.

The main aim of the conference was to work towards agreement on the best possible roadmap for the development of an integrated policy framework to support rural development in the country.

The European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD) was launched in 2012. The programme aims at boosting the production of food in Georgia and at reducing rural poverty. Besides the grants component, ENPARD also provides direct budget support to the Government of Georgia for the implementation of its agriculture sector strategy, and brings expertise and know-how to the authorities.
