The FINANCIAL — In a report unanimously adopted today on the humanitarian consequences of the actions of the terrorist group called “Islamic State”, the Committee on Migration makes an urgent appeal to all member states to show solidarity and responsibility in the face of this unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
“According to the UNHCR, 4 million refugees have fled the country and there are 7.5 million internally displaced persons, which makes Syrians the largest group of refugees under the UNHCR’s mandate”, said rapporteur Jean-Marie Bockel (France, EPP/CD) on the occasion of what he called the “sad 4th anniversary of the conflict”.
The committee commended the generosity not only of Turkey, but also of Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt, which, between them, have taken in nearly 92% of the refugees. Noting, however, that many countries are not taking in as many refugees as expected or issuing airport transit visas, the committee asks states, whenever possible, to grant refugee status. It also asks states to increase the funds allocated to humanitarian organisations, to support the setting up of a resettlement and humanitarian admission plan, to provide temporary or international protection to Syrian refugees and to cease collective expulsions at land and sea borders.
The report will be debated by the PACE at its spring session (20-24 April 2015) in Strasbourg.
