The FINANCIAL — Initial and renewal claims for unemployment insurance benefits in Canada fell 1.9% to 240,760 in April, Statistics Canada said on June 18, according to Nasdaq.
On a 12-month basis, claims rose 5.8%.
Job insurance claims are an indication of the number of people who could begin receiving unemployment benefits.
Claims in Prince Edward Island were down the most, at 13.5%, while Alberta, heart of Canada’s hard-hit oil patch, recorded a decline of 8.8%.
The number of people receiving regular jobless benefits edged up 0.5% to 521,300 in April, Statistics Canada said, led for the fourth month in a row by Alberta, which posted a 10.7% increase.
