The FINANCIAL — New and renewal claims for unemployment insurance benefits in Canada rose 1.8% to 238,700 in October, Statistics Canada said on December 17, according to Nasdaq.

On a 12-month basis, claims increased 5.8%.

Claims were up in most Canadian provinces, the agency noted, including 7.6% in Alberta nad 6.0% in Manitoba. Claims in British Columbia fell 3.1% and were little changed in Ontario.

Canada’s resource-dependent economy has been hit hard this year by the steep drop in commodity prices.

The number of people receiving regular jobless benefits edged down 0.6% in October from a month earlier to 539,700, Statistics Canada said. On a year-over-year basis, the total number of people receiving jobless benefits was up 8.2%.
