The FINANCIAL — Carlos Piñerúa was appointed the new World Bank Country Manager for Poland and the Baltic States.
In his new role, Mr. Piñerúa will oversee World Bank operations in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Mr. Piñerúa is replacing Ms. Marina Wes, who is now the World Bank Country Director for West Bank and Gaza.
“I am delighted to have been appointed the Country Manager for Poland, a country that is admired all over the world for its development success and economic progress in recent years,” says Carlos Piñerúa. “I am looking forward to accompanying Poland on its way to prosperity with equity and inclusion of all social groups and regions of the country.”
Mr. Piñerúa comes from Venezuela. He is an economist by training, with professional expertise in banking and financial sector issues and competitiveness. Mr. Piñerúa joined the World Bank in 2008; for the last two and a half years he was the Country Manager in Zagreb, Croatia. Prior to his career at the World Bank, Mr. Piñerúa worked for many years at the International Monetary Fund in the Middle East and Central Asia Department, according to the World Bank.
The new World Bank Country Manager for Poland is committed to continuing the dialog rooted in the World Bank’s global mission of fighting poverty and supporting shared prosperity. In 2017, Mr. Piñerúa will oversee the formulation of the new Country Partnership Framework for Poland, a document that outlines key challenges in a given country’s development policies and defines potential areas for World Bank engagement.
Currently, World Bank activities in Poland are based on the Country Partnership Strategy for 2014-2017, which focuses on economic competitiveness, equity and inclusion, and resource efficiency. In line with these priorities, the World Bank has extended development policy loans for Poland, participated in flood protection projects on the Odra and Vistula Rivers and offered technical assistance in the areas of fiscal policy, innovation, labor markets, healthcare, road safety, and elsewhere.
