Q. Georgia finally enjoys the visa-free regime with the European Union. What positive developments to you see on the market since then?
A. Visa liberalisation itself is a very positive achievement for Georgia.
Despite the fact that our company is involved in incoming tours and visa waiver does not affect us directly, it still influences our business in a positive way. Visa liberalisation raised the awareness of Georgia on international level and importantly improved its image. It brought the feeling of reliability and stability among the customers. Visa waiver eases the international communications. Now there is no need to plan your business trip long time earlier and the procedures are also easier.
Q. In general how would you asses Georgia’s visa policy? Are there any obstacles in this direction?
A. Georgia has visa-free regime to almost every countries which are target markets for Georgia. Accordingly, the existing visa regime does not create any problems neither for us nor for the tourists.
Q. How tourism-friendly Georgia is and what are the directions that still need improvement?
A. With its culture and history Georgia definitely is a tourism-friendly country. There is a huge progress in developing tourism environment in Georgia which requires involvement of not only the state institutions but the society as well.
One of the major problems is public transport for individual travellers and the drivers, who do not obey the traffic rules. Movement in the city is another problem. There are lots of traffic jams caused by chaotic traffic and faulty transport fleet. Pollution – citizens often pollute the streets, throw garbage in the streets. Imagine, you arrive to foreign country and see how the streets are full with trash. This is not pleasant to see. Service standard and quality at food objects and especially in the regions – this is also a problem in Georgia. All these problems can be solved by the society. If we pay more attention to the environment where we live and really want to show our hospitality traditions, we need to care about all above mentioned problems. In general, I would say that the tourism is developing in a right way in Georgia. Many good projects have been implemented recently that positively impacted Georgia’s international publicity.
Q. How many tourists did Caucasus Travel host in 2016 and mainly from which countries?
A. About 10,000 tourists arrived in Georgia thanks to our company last year, which was about 10 percent growth year-on-year. Mostly tourists came from the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Japan. We offer them to explore capital city Tbilisi and some of iconic areas of Georgia such as Mtskheta, Kazbegi, Kakheti, Gori, Uplistsikhe, Svaneti – which is favourite destination – Adjara region, Kutaisi. Tourists are mostly attracted by human factors, communication, hospitality of Georgians. Georgian cuisine is their favourite with Georgian wine of course. Tourists easily fall in love with Georgia’s historic-cultural sightseeing, nature and landscape.
