The FINANCIAL — On August 21, Chernihiv held opening ceremony of a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa in the historical part of the city, the national architectural and historical conservation Ancient Chernihiv.
Press secretary to the chairperson of Chernihiv regional state administration Natalia Kuprienko has told this to Ukrainian News.
"Opened on August 21, at about 6 p.m., city and region authorities and publicity attended the ceremony," she said.
The monument is a bronze bust on a white marble column.
Sculptor Hennadii Yershov crafted the monument, financed by philanthropists.
As to Chernihiv Governor Volodymyr Khomenko, Mazepa spent his own money on building, restoration and decoration of more than 40 houses in Ukraine, of them 20 within the territory of modern Chernihiv region.
A police source says the moment opened two days earlier, because a number of public organizations and parties planned to come to Chernihiv on August 24 and make disturbance during the opening ceremony.
"Pro-Russian organized groups from Odesa, Kyiv, and also some known politicians planned to come to make disturbance," he said.
As to the source, once opened the monument is being guarded by a policeman, they also installed a video monitoring device.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, on August 23 Ukraine celebrates the Day of the State Flag, on August 24 the Independence Day.
