The FINANCIAL — The press service of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has presented a video showing the new safe confinement being built to protect damaged Reactor 4 of Chornobyl Nuclear Power Station in Ukraine and to support its long-term decommissioning. According to the EBRD, the construction is on schedule to be slid into its final protective position in November this year.
The new safe confinement weighs more than 37,000 tonnes and is the largest moveable land-based object ever constructed, the EBRD said.
The EBRD has been administering the Chernobyl Shelter Fund (CSF) set up in 1997 to assist Ukraine in making the site of the current shelter over the destroyed 4th reactor stable and environmentally safe. This will create conditions for the eventual dismantling and decommissioning of the contaminated structure. As of November 2015, the CSF had received close to EUR 1.3 billion in total, with the EU’s contribution amounting to over EUR 430 million, according to EU Neighbourhood Info Centre.
