The FINANCIAL — The EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia discussed recent incidents of violence, and general conflict prevention issues at a meeting with Georgian, Abkhaz, and Russian representatives last week. The meeting of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) was held in the town of Gali in Abkhazia, and was chaired by the United Nations.
Participants discussed the current state of an investigation into a fatal incident that took place in May at a crossing point in the Zugdidi district, as well as other incidents of violence and missing persons, and general issues of conflict prevention and confidence building, according to EU Neighbourhood Info.
The European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) is an unarmed civilian monitoring mission of the European Union, deployed in September 2008 following the EU-mediated Six Point Agreement, which ended the August war. The EUMM aims to ensure that there is no return to hostilities, to facilitate the resumption of a safe and normal life for the local communities living on both sides of the border with Abkhazia and South Ossetia, to build confidence among the conflict parties and to inform EU policy in Georgia and the wider region.
