The FINANCIAL — According to Nika Apriashvili, Marketing Manager of Cinemas Rustaveli and Amirani, 45% of the box office’s October income came from 3D animation Despicable Me. The film 13 is in second place in terms of sales and Red is in third.
“The film 13 is responsible for 25% of income and the film has only been getting shown at our cinemas for one week. If we analyze the results after 1 month, we predict that 13 will be more profitable than Despicable Me. Red and other films share the remaining percents, we are also offering our viewers the movies Stone and Wall Street at the moment,” Apriashvili said.
“In Rustaveli and Amirani cinemas Machete, Despicable Me, Seazone, Social Network, Red and Stone are all available at the moment. The most profitable film so far has shown to be 3D animation Despicable Me which is mostly getting viewed by children,” Apriashvili said.
“In the case of the film 13, the market was quite prepared and everyone was waiting for the film screened by a Georgian Director. This was quite affective and now Georgians are very interested in seeing the American version of the original Georgian film. Having a Georgian Director is one of the main reasons why this film is so popular with Georgian viewers,” Apriashvili told The FINANCIAL.
As Apriashvili says, 3D films are always a bit more expensive than ordinary ones all around the world. According to most of the people interviewed by The FINANCIAL, 3D movies have become some of their favourite films to watch.
“I myself am a quite frequent Georgian cinema-goer. Lately I prefer to watch 3D films, as it brings added effect and makes you feel that you are participating in the film. The last animation in 3D that I saw was Despicable me and I had so much fun,” said Anna Dolidze, 24.
“I don’t know why, but there really is a boom in 3D movies all around the world. The first movie that I saw in 3D was Avatar, after which I became a most frequent viewer of 3D movies in cinemas,” said George Begashvili, 22.
According to Apriashvili, their viewers nearly always have the ability to catch world premiers in Georgian cinemas. There have even been cases of cinemas offering Georgian viewers movies up to a week before world premieres. However when The FINANCIAL did some research on new movies on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), it appeared that there is a definite lack of new movies in Georgian cinemas.
As IMDB notes, the U.S. Openings for OCTOBER 29th are: Monsters, Saw 3D, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest [limited], Welcome to the Rileys [limited], Waste Land [limited], Wild Target [limited], and Aftershock [limited].
IMDB’s USA Weekend Box-Office Summary week of 22 October 2010:
1. Paranormal Activity 2; 2. Jackass 3D; 3. Red; 4. Hereafter; 5. The Social Network; 6. Secretariat; 7. Life as We Know It; 8. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole; 9. The Town; 10. Easy A.
“We are doing our best to show world premieres. Our only obstacle is the number of screens in our cinemas. We do not have enough screens to show all of the newly launched films that can be shown. If there is a choice between two films which are coming out on the same date, we choose the one which we think most fits our market. The other film arrives a week after. If any of the new films are late in Georgia, that’s because we have a lack of cinema halls,” Apriashvili said.
“The films that arrive to Georgia are all blockbusters. It’s very rare for an independent film to be screened. We have shown some independent movies at our cinemas but Georgians mostly prefer to see the blockbusters currently popular around the world. The most popular movies recently have proven to be 3D films and demand for them has significantly increased. Georgians quite like action films as well,” Apriashvili said.
“We will soon offer our customers Open Season or Megamind. Then we will show the Georgian film I love you Baby and Saw 3D. This Georgian film will be quite interesting in my view. For the New Year together with the Georgian animation New Year Carol, we will show Jackass 3D. It is an MTV programme shown in 3D, Little Fockers and Somewhere, a new film by Sofia Coppola which will be available soon,” Apriashvili said.
According to Apriashvili, for the New Year, from 11 December, movie-goers will be able to see the Georgian cartoon New Year Carol. “It’s the first Georgian animation made in the last 10 years, it’s Georgian history – Georgian animation in 3D, and we hope that everyone will enjoy it,” Apriashvili added.
