The FINANCIAL — First Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Dimitry Kumsishvili participated in the ceremony dedicated to launching of thermal power plant construction in Gardabani.
Dimitry Kumsishvili examined the on-going construction works of the second, 230-MW combined cycle installed capacity TPP in Gardabani. “The foundation is almost prepared and turbines have already arrived in Poti. Therefore, we think that the construction will be accomplished within the schedule in 2020, before the winter season,” – Dimitry Kumsishvili noted.
According to the First Vice Prime Minister, new thermal power station is equipped with 230MW installed capacity gas and steam generators and turbines is very important for the sustainability of Georgia’s energy system. The purpose of the project is to create an additional source of energy for the country. “The TPP is also important in terms of demand of our country – electricity consumption is increasing year after year, therefore, the basic electricity is the power source that our country needs for stability,” – Kumsishvili commented.
The construction project is being implemented by the Gardabani TPP 2, which is the subsidiary of Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation. The thermopower plant will have a function “launching from zero”, which is provided via autonomous/independent diesel generator. This function is of outmost importance since it enables the TPP to be started even during the so called System Black-out, according to Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.
The combined cycle’s new energy-efficient (productivity factor exceeding 50%) is planned to be exploited for the 2019-2020 winter season. It should be noted that the similar TPP with the installed capacity of 230 MW, the GaArdabani 1, has been put into the operation in 2015.
The Project is being implemented by the China Tianchen Engineering Corporation (TCC). One of the largest Chinese corporations, the TCC is an engineering corporation founded in 1953 with annual turnover of over 1 billion USD and it is involved in over 30 international projects worldwide
The project is being supervised by the Swiss Office of the International Engineering Consulting Organization POYRY, which ensures the compliance of the project design and the construction process with international standards as well as the quality requirements of the project.
