The FINANCIAL — EBRD President Sir Suma Chakrabarti said the Bank was firmly committed to the unification of Cyprus and he also believed shareholders would back support for the economy of a united island.
Speaking at the EBRD’s Annual Meeting in Cyprus, the President said: “The EBRD remains staunchly committed to promoting efforts towards unification.” He added: “I am also sure that our shareholders would be strongly supportive of the economy of a united Cyprus.”
Sir Suma paid tribute to the success of Cyprus in overcoming its financial crisis and returning to a path of economic growth. He was also proud of the impact of the EBRD’s investments in the country of over €220 million since 2014, according to EBRD.
The EBRD’s backing for economic integration across all its regions of operations was matched by its support for reconciliation within the island of Cyprus itself, he said.
The EBRD had worked hard to fulfil the mandate set out by the Bank’s Governors to deliver projects across the whole island, for the benefit of both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
