The FINANCIAL — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced the establishment of an Advisory Group of seven eminent persons to advise the ADB on how to strengthen its programs to meet the global challenge of climate change.
The Advisory Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development will help ADB Management consider innovative ways of assisting ADB's developing member countries move their economies onto low-carbon development paths and address the social impacts of climate change.
ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda announced plans to convene the panel in his speech to the Board of Governors at the opening of ADB's 42nd Annual Meeting, held in Bali, Indonesia.
"To deal with these complex issues, I am pleased to announce that I have established an advisory group of internationally recognized climate change experts to help us develop programs relevant to the region in the medium- and long-term," Mr. Kuroda said.
The Advisory Group will be chaired by Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute, and also comprises Professor Hironori Hamanaka, Chair, Board of Directors, Institute of Global Environmental Strategies; Ms. Huguette Labelle, Chair, Transparency International; Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director, The Earth Institute at Columbia University; Dr. Emil Salim, an adviser to Indonesia's President on environment and sustainable development issues; Dr. Klaus Toepfer, Founding Director, Institute for Advanced Studies Climate, Earth System and Sustainability Sciences; and Professor Dadi Zhou, Director General (Emeritus) of the Energy Research Institute.
The inaugural meeting of the Advisory Group will be held later this year, and is expected to provide ADB's Management with perspectives and advice on some of the key issues to be discussed at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.
Tackling climate change is a key component of Strategy 2020, ADB's Long-Term Strategic Framework that covers the next decade of ADB's operations.
