The FINANCIAL — In the spirit of Nelson Mandela International Day, J.P. Morgan employees in Johannesburg partnered with the Children’s Institute and local charity Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa to help pack meals that make a huge difference to the hungry children of South Africa, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co.
Recognizing Mandela’s 67 years of selfless public service, 67 staff from the Johannesburg office were joined by their families and worked to put together 6,800 meals. J.P. Morgan was one of 67 corporations invited to support these local organizations, alongside the Department of Basic Education, to help pack a total of 40,800 meals.
July 18 marked Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday. Nelson Mandela International Day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009. The day honors the legacy of Mandela, South Africa’s former President, and his values of volunteering and community service. The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so, build a global movement for good, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co.
The packed meals went to children in rural schools in the most remote regions of the country. More than three million children under the age of 17 years old experience household hunger in South Africa, according to the Children’s Institute, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co.
