The FINANCIAL — On March 13 the Technical and Construction Supervision Agency of the Government, together with the representatives of the European Union, United Kingdom and Lithuania launched a twinning project entitled : “Strengthening the Capacities of the Technical and Construction Supervision Agency in Development of the Market Surveillance System in Georgia.”
The 24 month, GEL 4.5 million (EUR 1.5 million) EU-financed project started in January 2018 and is implemented by market surveillance authorities of the United Kingdom and Lithuania, working directly with the Technical and Construction Supervision Agency (TCSA) of Georgia, according to Delegation of the European Union to Georgia.
The objective of the project is to assist the Government of Georgia to comply with EU best practice in line with the objectives contained in the EU/Georgia Association Agreement (AA) and Deep and Comprehensive Fair Trade Area (DCFTA). Specifically, the project will assist the TCSA to development its legal framework, provide trainings and guidance to TCSA inspectors and raise awareness of Product Safety and Market Surveillance amongst other organisations, businesses and consumers within Georgia.
Mr Grigol Kakauridze, Head of TCSA, noted that:
“The project will assist in further developing the market surveillance system for non-food products in Georgia, by protecting the health and safety of citizens, supporting local businesses and improving access to foreign markets by removing barriers to trade.”
Mr Vincent Rey, Head of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation to Georgia stated:
“Twinning projects like this one bring together EU Member State administrations and the Georgian Government agencies to share EU best practice on a very practical level. This project will not only help the Government meet its commitments in the Association Agreement and access the EU single market, but market surveillance will also directly benefit Georgians by helping identify dangerous or substandard products and remove these from store shelves”
Mr David Baker (UK) the Lead Project Leader noted:
“The UK is proud to be involved in this project supporting the TCSA, and we look forward to working with our Lithuanian partners to support our Georgian counterparts as best we can to adopt best European practices in this area.”
Ms Neringa Baroniene the Lithuanian Project Leader said that during the course of the project, market surveillance experts from the UK and Lithuania would provide information, advice, guidance and training to TCSA inspectors and other relevant stakeholder organisations to help develop their competence to undertake the full range of market surveillance activities to protect consumers from dangerous products and reputable businesses that endeavor to comply with the law from unfair competition.
