The FINANCIAL — Experts have identified the best ways to increase forested areas in Georgia, as part of the EU-funded Clima East project. Concluding a study in the Dedoplistskaro district of eastern Georgia, the experts found that the approach to the regulation, maintenance and land management of Georgian forests could be adapted to reduce the risk of climate change.
The experts conducted a field visit, meeting with local authorities and taking soil samples from the degraded land as part of the project. They found that with the proper measures full rehabilitation of the area could be ensured, increasing its resilience and mitigation potential. Analysing the information and material obtained, and taking in consideration the climatic conditions of the area, the experts identified the optimal species for planting and calculated the projected reduction in annual greenhouse gas emissions.
Clima East helps make degraded land in Georgia ready for planting forests through conducting and publishing expert studies, which build capacity in assessing the potential of afforestation of degraded lands in Georgia, adaptation to climate change and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, according to EU Neighbourhood Info.
The east of Georgia is one of the most vulnerable areas in the country. It is economically significant, but has suffered significant land degradation from wind and water-based erosion.
The Clima East project supports climate change mitigation and adaptation in the Eastern Partnership countries and Russia. More specifically, it aims to foster improved climate change policies, strategies and market mechanisms more in line with the EU acquis in the partner countries, by supporting regional cooperation and improving access to information regarding EU climate change policies and acquis. The Clima East Expert Facility provides specific and dedicated short term expert support to organisations in the Clima East Partner countries to assist in defined tasks on the ground in climate change policy and action.
