The FINANCIAL — MINSK. The EU does not see Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko as the only worthwhile person for the post, a senior official said on November 15, according to RIA Novosti.
He is not the only worthy candidate running in the December 19 presidential elections, European Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fule said at a press conference in Minsk.
The long-time leader, who has fallen out with the Kremlin, his traditional supporter, is likely to face challenges at the polls.
"We would like to see free and fair elections in Belarus," Fule said. "We will respect the choice of the people."
Last week, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite was reported as saying that only Lukashenko could safeguard the independence of Belarus.
