The FINANCIAL — The European Commission said it was `studying` a request from the Ukrainian government for the EU to monitor Gazprom supplies to the Ukraine, according to Thompson Financial.
A spokesman for EU energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs told reporters that the EU executive received the letter this morning but needs further clarification from the Ukrainian government over what it is asking for.
The commission on Friday said it was considering calling for an urgent gas coordination group meeting to be held over Gazprom`s threat to cut supplies to the Ukraine if Kiev does not resolve its debts by February 11.
In a statement, Piebalgs said a meeting will be called for `if the situation calls for action`.
Today, the spokesman stressed, however, that the commission does not involve itself in commercial disputes and it is up to the two parties to find a solution.
Gazprom puts Ukraine`s debt for gas deliveries at 1.5 bln usd.
