The FINANCIAL — The Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Thomas Frellesen, and the Head of the EU’s Anti-Corruption Initiative, Eka Tkeshelashvili, voiced their support for the launch of the anticorruption court on 13 June.
The EU’s Anti-Corruption Initiative aims at enhancing the capacity of local government, civil society and investigative journalists to contribute to the fight against corruption.
“One cannot underestimate the importance of the creation of the anti-corruption court in Ukraine”, said Tkeshelashvili.
The EU Anti-Corruption Initiative’s main goal is to implement anti-corruption policy in Ukraine. This will happen, among other measures, through the support of newly created anti-corruption agencies such as NABU and SAPO, according to EU Neighbours East Info.
Frellesen stressed the importance of preserving the independence of the anti-corruption bodies: “We are confident that the EU Anti-Corruption Initiative will make a significant contribution to the corruption struggle in Ukraine.”
The EU Anti-Corruption Initiative is the biggest EU support programme so far in the area of anti-corruption in Ukraine. It is implemented by the Danish Development Agency (DANIDA). The initiative will last three years and has a budget of EUR 15.84 million. The other two components of the initiative are the support of the newly created anti-corruption agencies and the provision of international expertise to the anti-corruption parliamentary committee.
