The FINANCIAL — Congratulations to Dr Christos Pitelis who has been awarded the European Management Review (EMR) 2010 Best Paper Award for his joint paper with Peter G. Klein, Joseph T. Mahoney and Anita M. McGahan.
The paper, entitled "Toward a theory of public entrepreneurship", has been published in the European Management Review, 7(1), 2010.
European Management Review editors Alfonso Gambardella and Maurizio Zollo praised the paper for its importance and originality, commenting:
"The Klein et al paper opens a new field of research. While entrepreneurship is a buzzword today, little attention has been paid to the possibility that the innovation, experimentation and energy that entrepreneurial activity bring to the private initiative can be put to use in the public domain as well. The paper develops a framework to analyse these issues. In so doing, it highlights the similarities and differences between private and public entrepreneurship. Among others, the latter include difficulties in measuring objectives, the different nature of the selection process, and the higher opportunities of rent-seeking due to the lesser exposure to market tests. These and other issues highlighted by the paper open, by themselves, new trajectories of research. The issue is also particularly relevant for Europe and emerging economies where the role of the public sector is more important than in more market-based economies."
