The FINANCIAL — Infidelity is one of the most common causes for divorce in Georgia, statistics show.
The number of disputes brought to Tbilisi Civil Court in 2012 was 1,183. It is said that marriages end in divorce at court because of cheating mainly. Reasons for divorce are not officially registered in Georgia however.
“The most common reason for divorce in Georgia is when a partner has been unfaithful,” said Giorgi Tsuladze, demographic expert of the Institute of Demography and Sociology. “Another common reason for divorce is marriages being entered in to at too young an age, when the significance of marriage is not properly appreciated yet. Another reason for marriages ending is sexual incompatibility. If a couple has sexual problems, then any misunderstanding can be amplified in to something insurmountable,” he added.
Besides cheating, other reasons for divorce include when two individuals can no longer get along and being together is more harmful then being apart, according to Tbilisi City Court. Disputes are also being heard where couples argue about children and property issues.
Tako Todua, 37, has just got divorced, after 17 years of marriage, for reasons of infidelity. “There are always many problems within a family, but this is normal, people can overcome daily crises,” said Tako Todua. “But cheating is an unforgivable mistake when it comes to matrimony. Very often women in Georgia forgive their husbands for cheating if it is not regular, as I did. But after so many years, I consider this problem to be what really ended my marriage,” she added. Todua’s case is currently waiting to be heard in court.
There were 30,455 marriages and 7,144 divorces in Georgia in 2012 according to Tbilisi Civil Registry. On average 83 people got married and 19 divorced per day last year. The biggest number of marriages was registered in September (3,026 cases), in November (3,001 cases) and in August (3,000 cases).
As for 2013, there are 5,527 marriages and 1,102 divorces registered so far. This year the number of marriages has increased. 3,217 marriages were registered in February 2013, while 2,396 were registered in the same month of 2012. On average, for January and February this year, 123 marriages are registered per day.
An increase is evident in the divorce rate as well. Whereas 650 divorces were registered in February 2012, this year its number amounted to 564 in February.
This is an official statistic but experts say that the real number of divorces is much higher. The reason is that most separated couples don’t officially register their divorces. And only legally-registered divorces are included in statistical data.
The number of divorces according to the duration of marriages in 2011 is provided by the National Statistics Office of Georgia, according to which: the majority of divorces – 1,524 cases – were registered within the first four years of marriage; 1,045 divorces were registered after 5-9 years of marriage; 817 divorces – after 10-14 years; 898 divorces – after 15-19 years; 1,430 – after 20 years.
