The FINANCIAL — In January-August 2018 external merchandise trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to USD 8 100.7 million, 22.6 percent higher year-on-year.
The exports equaled USD 2 146.4 million (27.1 percent higher), while the imports stood at USD 5 954.3 million (21.0 percent higher). The negative trade balance was USD 3 807.9 million in January-August 2018 and its share in external trade turnover constituted 47.0 percent. Export excluding re-export amounted to USD 1 508.1 million, 13.5 percent higher year-on-year.
In January-August 2018 export from Georgia to the EU countries amounted to USD 455.8million (11.4 percent higher compared to the January-August 2017) and constituted 21.2 percent in total exports, while imports amounted to USD 1 751.0 million (24.3 percent higher) with 29.4 percent in total imports.
The external trade turnover of Georgia with the EU countries amounted to USD 2 206.8 million, grew by 21.4 percent compared to the corresponding indicator of the previous year. 34.0 percent of the trade deficit came to the EU countries (31.0 percent in January-August 2017).
In January-August 2018 export to the CIS countries stood at USD 1 025.6 million (51.3 percent higher compared to the January-August 2017) and reached 47.8 percent of total exports, while imports equaled USD 1 744.9 million (23.7 percent higher) with 29.3 percent in total import. The external trade turnover with the CIS countries totaled USD 2770. 6 million (higher by 32.6 percent). CIS countries accounted for 18.9 percent of the overall trade deficit in the corresponding period.
In January-July 2018 share of the top ten trading partners by exports in the total exports of Georgia amounted to 71.5 percent. The top partners were Azerbaijan (USD 251.8 million), Russia (USD 240.8 million) and Turkey (USD 172.6 million).
In January-August 2018 share of the top ten trading partners by imports in the total imports of Georgia amounted to 65.4 percent. The top partners were Turkey (USD 939.3 million), Russia (USD 599.2 million) and China (USD 582.5 million).
In January-August 2018 share of the top ten trading partners in the total external trade turn- over of Georgia amounted to 66.2 percent. The top trading partners were Turkey (USD 1 121.7 mil- lion), Russia (USD 879.8 million) and China (USD 727.3 million).
In January-August 2018 Copper ores and concentrates reclaimed the first place in the list of top export items, equaling USD 319.1 million, or 14.9 percent of total exports. Exports of Motor cars totaled USD 243.0 million and its share in the total exports amounted to 11.3 percent. Ferro-alloys occupied the third place. Exports of this commodity group stood at USD 230.4 million and 10.7 percent of the total exports.
The top import commodities in January-August 2018 were Petroleum and petroleum oils im- ports of which amounted to USD 576.9 million and 9.7 percent of the total imports. Motor cars followed in the lis twith USD 389.6million, or 6.5 percent of imports. Copperores and concentrates came third with USD 259.8 million (4.4 percent of imports).
