The FINANCIAL — Facebook is now the number 1 social networking site in Georgia, according to Alexa, California based subsidiary company of Amazon which is known for its website ranking.
Facebook beat Russian social networking website odnoklasniki.ru and google.com. The number of Georgian users is increasing daily. According to unofficial data it reached 120,000 points recently.
Facebook is now distributing news faster than TV channels or newspapers. Scandalous TV footage of Imedi TV workers appeared on facebook earlier than on the TV or newswires. Almost all leading political parties and NGOs in Georgia now have their own facebook page.
Georgian companies started using a facebook a few months ago. The official page of TBC was created on March 1, 2010. Just a few months ago Russian odnoklasniki.ru was occupying almost 80% of users surfing social networks in Georgia. It lost its popularity in a very short time, due to the Facebook boom and claims by local media that Odnoklasniki is controlled by Russian FSB. According to Alexa the website has lost its leading position in all Caucasian countries.
Odnoklasniki is still popular in Russia and Ukraine. It follows vkontakte.ru – a website that leads all social network polls in these countries.
In Georgia Odnoklasniki follows youtube, another social network website. Despite its low popularity, Odnoklasniki.ru attracts many more advertisers from Georgia. Among them retailers, airlines and auto dealers, while there is no single ad of theirs on facebook.
