The FINANCIAL — A round table organized by the EU-funded FLEG II forestry project in Kyiv has focused on the rules of the timber trade, in particular how to make those rules efficient for sellers, buyers and the State, which owns the major part of forests, according to the EU Neighbourhood Info Centre.
Participants reacted negatively to a new draft bill to ban exports of roundwood and sawnwood, suggesting to use other methods of foreign trade regulation. In this regard, FLEG prepared recommendations, which in turn were used for the draft rules of timber trade and other documents, which have been submitted to the State Forest Agency
According to a press release, “it is expected that after joint finalization they will replace the regulations that are currently in force”. New rules will facilitate the transition of the forest sector of Ukraine to European standards and rules of operation, increase its competitiveness and contribution to the gross domestic product.
The €9 million ENPI FLEG II programme deepens reforms in forestry policy, and legal and administrative matters in the sector while carrying out pilot projects, and addressing forest fire and climate issues. It builds upon the achievements of its predecessor, ENPI FLEG I programme.
