The FINANCIAL — On December 11, 2007 an alliance of food companies including Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Mars and Burger King signed a European Union pledge to stop marketing junk food to children under 12 years old.
The group of 11 companies, which represent more than 50% of the food and beverage advertising spent in the EU, have agreed to stop running junk food ads on TV, in print and on the internet to under-12s by the end of 2008.
The alliance, which also includes PepsiCo, Kraft, Unilever, Danone and Ferrero, have agreed not to market products in primary schools, except where “specifically requested by or agreed with the school administration for educational purposes.”
A number of companies, such as Coca-Cola, Kraft and Mars, have previously agreed to a US responsible marketing code around advertising to children.
The difference with this new programme, called the EU Pledge, is that the 11 companies have agreed to have independently verified monitoring of their reduction in marketing, from January 2009.
How Healthy is the New Year Menu in Georgia
Meanwhile Soft Drinks and Healthy Dairy Sales Statistics at Populi Georgian Retailer
The whole number of Pepsi and other drinks by Iberia Refreshments sold at the Populi retailer chain in 2007 is 357 460 the total value of which is GEL 346 701.
As for Coca Cola Bottlers Georgia products, the company has sold at Populi 608 603 items the total value of which is GEL 557 485.
In terms of the healthy dairy market, Sante GMT Products statistics for 2007 sales at Populi looks this way: 43 549 items for GEL 53 664, and other dairy manufacturer Eco Georgia: 30 153 items for GEL 46 357.
“We are planning to sell 160 000 row cases. During the winter holidays we will increase production four times,” Levan Karseladze, Pepsi Marketing Manager, told the FINANCIAL.
“PEPSI does not have negative effect on health. It is a tasty and refreshing product. Especially in this period it is impossible not to have Pepsi on the table,” said Karseladze.
It is excessive amounts of alcoholic drinks and/or high calorie, hard-to-digest foods, and never Coke, Pepsi or fast foods by McDonalds, that drive Georgians to hospitals on New Year’s Eve.
Satsivi (a turkey dish), Gozinaki (a dessert made with honey and walnuts), roast pig or piglet, Chuchkhela (a dessert made of grape juice and nuts)… the list goes on but would be incomplete without putting Georgian wines on the menu within Georgian families.
“A glass of wine at dinner is fine, but a whole bottle could cause health complications. To be healthy you must feel healthy which means setting no unreasonable limitations of food or excessive physical and mental activity. Just keep in mind that a diet can be good but hunger destroys the whole organism, running on 2-3 meals a day is perfect if you’re in a good shape and physical condition. Cholesterol is not in itself a fatal item in food but it is excessive amounts of cholesterol that is harmful,” Guga Kuzanov, GINN Director, told The FINANCIAL.

As Healthyeatingadvisor says, healthy eating is essential to your health and well being. In your great grandparents’ days, healthy eating was easy. Food was grown on nutrient rich soil without herbicides and pesticides. It was whole, natural and unprocessed. Meals, breads and desserts were cooked or baked in the home from scratch, not produced in a laboratory from chemicals not intended for human consumption.
It’s true. With our fast-paced lifestyles, we don’t have time to devote hours or entire days to preparing healthy meals to nourish our families and ourselves. But are we really doing ourselves any favours by eating highly processed food, laden with sugar, in many forms, and filled with chemicals we can’t pronounce, much less know what they are and what they are doing to our insides?
Healthy eating will help you to: feel great and have lots of energy so you can enjoy life more, have a strong immune system so you stay well, even when everyone else is getting sick, maintain a healthy weight and look slim and trim and physically fit , stay as alert and mentally sharp at 60, 70 and even 80 as you were at 20, do the same things at 65 that you did at 20, with the same gusto, live to be 100 and be physically fit and active, prevent certain diseases known to be related to diet and nutrition, particularly cancer, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity.
