The FINANCIAL — European Commissioner for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič said he was “reassured that the supply of gas to the EU markets remains secure”, in comments after gas talks with Russia and Ukraine yesterday, adding he was satisfied they had managed to safeguard the full application of the Winter Package for supply needs in Ukraine.
Šefčovič said Naftogaz would pre-pay Gazprom for sufficient quantities of gas to cover Ukraine’s domestic consumption in March, while continuing to guarantee undisrupted transit of gas to the EU, according to EU Neighbourhood Info Centre.
He said the issue of supplies to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine was highly complex in legal, technical and political terms, adding the issue would be discussed again.
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the outcome of the talks could help bridge differences over gas supply between Ukraine and Russia. “These efforts are part of the concrete support of the European Union to the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.”
