The FINANCIAL — Within the framework of the Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) program, the Asian Development Bank organized a meeting at the Radisson Blue Iveria, which was attended by over 90 delegates of the member states and representatives of Government agencies of Georgia.
Meeting aimed at discussing the preparation procedures of the new long-term strategy of the CAREC. Government officials, within the frames of their field of competence, expressed their opinions and proposed the activities within the framework of the strategy, according to Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.
Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Genadi Arveladze opened the session. “Today Georgia is hosting a high-level meeting of the Organization of the Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation, which is held twice a year. Tajikistan is the CAREC coordinator this year, but Georgia stands today as a platform of this meeting. We cooperate with the Member States in the development of various economic and energy corridors, as well as in trade and customs sectors. This is a very important aspect for further developing of trade relations between the countries and for promotion of the sale of the products at each other’s markets” – Genadi Arveladze stated.
Director General of the Central and West Asia Department of the ADB, Sean O’Sullivan also addressed the audience. “Today we are talking about the CAREC, which is Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation. All countries, including Central Asia, the Caucasus and the South Asian countries are talking about the strengthening of cooperation in such sectors as energy and trade. Today we discuss such important issue as the development of a new strategy. We very much hope that Georgia will become actively involved as a progressive country and help us to become the leaders in terms of regional cooperation. I am sure that involvement of all the members, including Georgia, will bring additional benefit to the CAREC” – Sean O’Sullivan said.
Georgia joint the CAREC regional organization in October 2016 and became its 11th member-state. Other members of the organization are Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. CAREC, in cooperation with different international financial organizations, is implementing large-scale infrastructure and economic projects aiming at development of trade and investment between the countries of the region, enhancing the transport corridor potential, strengthening cooperation in the field of energy and setting out new projects for further implementation by the member states.
