The FINANCIAL — On July 3-4, the first round of negotiations on the text of the Draft Agreement on International Passenger and Freight Transportation between the Government of Georgia and the Government of the People’s Republic of China was held under the chairmanship of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia at the Tbilisi Marriott Hotel.
The initiation of the agreement by the Georgian side was preceded by the request of the Georgian carriers to create the relevant legal basis for launching the motor transport with China, according to Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.
Within the framework of the negotiations, the main provisions of the project were agreed and the relevant protocol was signed. The Chinese side invited the Georgian side to the People’s Republic of China in the beginning of August of the current year for the final (the second) round of negotiations. After the second round of negotiations, it will be possible to sign the agreement.
The signing of the Agreement will facilitate to increase the volume of passenger and freight transportation between Georgia and the People’s Republic of China and have positive impact on mutual economic cooperation.
The Draft Agreement determines the transportation of the freight transport via quota permits through bilateral, transit or third party countries. The number of quotas shall be determined by the parties annually and the relevant permission documents will be transferred to each other.
The Agreement also provides for the settlement of legal issues related to motor transport / transportation between the Contracting Parties that will facilitate the carriers of the People’s Republic of China and Georgia in their successful activity.
The signing of the Agreement as well as the attracting of the additional freight flows to Georgia are of greatest significance for Georgia.
Negotiations indicate that the development of the motor transportation between Georgia and China, along with railway-container transportation, is one of the key factors in deepening cooperation within the China’s initiative of the One Road, One Belt.
Representatives of the Transport and Logistics Development Department of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, the LEPL Land Transport Agency as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and the Ministry of Justice of Georgia introduced Georgia in the negotiations.
