The FINANCIAL — Regional Georgian broadcasters took part in a workshop on ethical standards on September 18, under a joint EU-Council of Europe project.
The training on ‘Promoting freedom, professionalism and pluralism of the media’ covered ethical principles for the national Communications Commission and media outlets during the pre-election campaign. It was supported by the Georgian National Communications Commission in partnership the Georgian Association of Regional Broadcasters, according to EU Neighbourhood Info.
Training was given for representatives of regional media outlets operating in minority populated areas. A Council of Europe expert provided guidance on specific topics related to media coverage regulations, such as programme airtime requirements, allocation of paid and free political advertising, and disclosure of media outlet funding. As a result of this meeting, an election manual was prepared in line with international best practice standards, and with the provisions set in the Election Code and the Law on Broadcasting.
The joint CoE/EU project “Promoting freedom, professionalism and pluralism of the media” was launched in January 2015 and aims to improve freedom, independence, pluralism and diversity of media, to review media legislation and regulation to bring these in line with European standards.
