The FINANCIAL — On 28 October 2015, in New York, during the plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly, Georgia was elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the term 2016-2018 with 177 votes. Overall 18 seats, distributed regionally, were available in the Council for elections in 2015. Georgia was elected unopposed, taking one of the two vacant seats allocated to the Group of Eastern European States.
The Human Rights Council is made up of 47 United Nations Member States. It is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing human rights violations and make recommendations on them, according to MFA of Georgia.
Georgia, which has never been elected in the Council before, is privileged to serve as a member of the UN body that represents a vital mechanism for enhancing human rights standards worldwide. The Council membership underlines the commitment of the Government of Georgia to further advance its national and foreign policies for the protection of human rights and gives Georgia a remarkable opportunity to further engage in joint international undertakings for addressing human rights violations and ensuring protection of human rights of all people.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia congratulates the other members elected in the Council and reiterates its gratitude for the valuable support from the UN Member States to the candidature of Georgia.
